Coca Cola Chicken

It's taken me years to pluck up the courage to try this recipe. I just couldn't get my head round how it would taste. A quick search on the net for assurance and it seems cooking with coke is quite common. Recipes galore on the net.

While the chicken was being heated up for dinner, Mr Redneck did a tasting test and pronounced "this chicken is very nice".

Joy......I can cook this again. Another quick and easy dish.

The taste is sweet but not overly sweet and is well balanced by the other ingredients.
Coca Cola Chicken

Ingredients
1.5kg chicken pieces
1 can 355ml coke
2 Tbsp lemon juice
5 thin slices of ginger
2 clove garlic, chopped
4 Tbsp soy sauce
2 tsp dark soya sauce
1 red chilli deseeded
1 Tbsp cooking oil
sprinkling of salt to taste

Method
1. Marinate chicken with coke and lemon juice for at least 30 minutes.

2. Heat oil in a wok and sauté garlic and ginger until fragrant.

3. Pour the coke from the chicken into a small pot. Heat to boil and set aside.

4. Add chicken to the wok and stir fry for 5 minutes.

4. Pour the boiled coke and the rest of the ingredients to the chicken.

5. Mix well, cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes or until the chicken is cooked. If there is still a lot of liquid, turn the heat up and boil to reduce and thicken the gravy. Season with salt to taste.

Braised Chicken with coke
Note : The gravy can be thicken with a solution of cornflour and water.

Tip : This dish freezes well.

We use 7-up in our marinade for chicken barbecue. I guess that does sound weird but it turns out a delicious chicken. Cola-cola is yummy too!

e vancouver,
7up in marinade sounds good. Your Philippine style barbecue chicken looks really finger licking.

I first tasted Coca Cola chicken back in uni years ago. It was strange to know Coke was used to cook the chicken but the taste was amazing!

Hello,

Amazingly, coca-cola chicken is yummy! Thank you for sharing. Have it tried cooking it with Coke light?

Amy, it is odd isn't it how coke chicken can turn out to be so delicious.

I have never tried it with Coke Light since we don't drink that. But better to stick with the real Coke as I believe this dish needs the sugar in Coke.

Hi,
Thanks for another dinner idea. I made this with good results. I think the ginger made the dish not too sweet and also gave it an Asian taste.

Hi KY,

So glad you like this coke chicken. Surprising isn't it, how it doesn't turn out as sweet as one thinks it would.

Thanks for the feedback.
